An alternative to FDDI: DPMA and the Pretzel ring

چکیده
| This paper proposes an eecient, fair, and simple capacity{1 protocol replacing fddi. In the recent years, two network protocols gained predominance in very fast Local and in Metropolitan Area Networks: fddi and dqdb. The fddi ring{protocol combination is well-suited for large local (\campus") area networks. However , for larger networks, fddi users suuer excessive access delays, even under very light traac. Moreover, fddi achieves full capacity only in special circumstances, and heavy load is not a suucient condition for achieving it. We propose a network topology that is very similar to the dual ring and a token-passing protocol that yield a true capacity{1 network even for modest values of the ttrt. Its additional properties include total fairness and very small access delays under light load. This makes the proposed protocol a reasonable option to use in combination with the dual counter-rotating ring. The proposed network should not be diicult to implement using standard fddi components.

Timing Properties of the FDDI-M Medium Access Protocol for a Class of Synchronous Bandwidth Allocation Schemes
The FDDI Standard speci"es a 100 Mbits/s "bre-optic token ring network that has been implemented and widely installed. The FDDI medium access control (MAC) protocol, however, has the inherent de"ciency that, at most, one half of the bandwidth of a FDDI ring can be used to transmit synchronous messages. In a recent paper, a modi"cation to the FDDI MAC protocol, called FDDI-M, was proposed to ove...
متن کاملO N Improving the Fault Detection and Reliability in Fddi Networks
FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) is a 100 Mbps token ring network with two counter rotating optical rings. Various possible faults (like lost token, link failures etc.) are considered and fault detection and the ring recovery process in case of a failure and the reliability mechanisms provided are studied. We suggest a new method to improve the fault detection and ring recovery process. ...
متن کاملAnalysis of Efficient FDDI Network
Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) provides a 100 Mbit/s optical standard for data transmission in a local area network and can support thousands of users. FDDI can be implemented as a higher speed version of a token ring and is designed to work over fiber. In this Paper we have analyzed the performance of the FDDI systems depending on the various parameters. Also, the efficiency of the FD...
متن کاملThe Effect of Local Buffer Memory Size on FDDI Throughput
The effect of the size of local buffer packet memory on the throughput of FDDI adapters is examined. The analysis focuses on transmit buffer size and covers both the loaded and unloaded FDDI ring cases. A hypothetical EISA FDDI adapter design is used as a vehicle to demonstrate the throughput characteristics of different local buffer memory sizes. Calculations are done to size the buffer with r...
متن کاملMATRIX VALUATION PSEUDO RING (MVPR) AND AN EXTENSION THEOREM OF MATRIX VALUATION
Let R be a ring and V be a matrix valuation on R. It is shown that, there exists a correspondence between matrix valuations on R and some special subsets ?(MVPR) of the set of all square matrices over R, analogous to the correspondence between invariant valuation rings and abelian valuation functions on a division ring. Furthermore, based on Malcolmson’s localization, an alternative proof for t...
